What Can Cause a Jackknife Tractor-Trailer Accident?

Throughout Florida’s Gulf Coast, tractor-trailers are a common sight, transporting goods across the state and beyond. Traffic reports describing delays caused by jackknifed tractor-trailers are also frequent occurrences in this area. A jackknife accident occurs when a tractor-trailer skids, causing the trailer to swing outward and form an acute angle with the cab, resembling the shape of a folding pocket knife. This loss of control typically happens when the trailer's wheels lock up, while the tractor continues to move forward.

A jackknife accident can lead to the closure of several lanes of traffic, and even worse, serious injuries if an oncoming vehicle cannot avoid a collision with the truck. Several factors can contribute to a jackknife accident, including:

  • Speeding — Driving too fast for road or weather conditions can increase the likelihood of a jackknife accident, especially when sudden braking is necessary.
  • Poor weather conditions — Rain can create a slippery road surface compromising the truck’s traction, while fog could cause a commercial vehicle operator to recognize a hazard too late, leading them to slam on the brakes.
  • Faulty brakes — Defective parts and worn-out brake systems nan lead to the wheels locking up and triggering a jackknife situation
  • Sharp turns — Attempting to negotiate sharp turns or curves at high speeds can cause the trailer to swing out of control, putting the vehicle at risk of jackknifing.

Due to the size and weight of tractor-trailers, jackknife accidents can result in severe, possibly fatal, physical harm and extensive property damage. Victims who survive these collisions might suffer from a range of injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, fractures and internal organ damage.

From a legal standpoint, determining liability in a jackknife accident can be complex. Multiple parties may be held accountable, including the truck driver, trucking company, vehicle manufacturer and maintenance provider. Establishing negligence and proving liability often requires a thorough investigation, including examining maintenance records, driver logs, black box data, and eyewitness testimony. After addressing your urgent medical needs, finding a proven Florida truck accident lawyer should be your next priority.
