Bicycle Safety Tips

Bicycle accidents are an unfortunate reality, considering bicycles and cars often share roadways. While occasionally there is nothing a bicyclist can do to prevent being hit by other drivers, there are some safety tips you can keep in mind the next time you head out on your bike that can reduce the probability of an accident.

Here are a few bicycle safety tips to remember:

  • Obey all rules of the road. Remember: bicyclists have to follow the same rules on the roadways that vehicles do. So be sure to obey all of the traffic signs and signals you come across, and follow all right of way rules.
  • Do not ride against the flow of traffic. Again, the same rules apply for bicyclists; ride on the right side of the road with the flow of traffic. Drivers will not be looking for bicyclists that are coming toward them.
  • Never pass on the right. Drivers might not be prepared for bicyclists to pass them on the right. This is especially important at intersections. If a driver is attempting to turn right, allow him or her to make their turn without passing, as you could otherwise get into an accident.
  • Wear a helmet. This will guard you against the potential of severe brain injuries. You should also refrain from wearing headphones so that you are not distracted from everything that’s happening on the road.
  • Use signals. Use hand signals to show your intent to turn left or right. Not only is this a law, but it is a courtesy to people sharing the road with you.
  • Use reflectors or lights. When riding at night, you need to be sure that you are visible to other drivers on the road. Reflectors and lights can make a difference in ensuring your safety.
