One man died and several other people were injured in a two-car accident near Venice Beach on Thursday, June 6.
According to police, a blue Ford Econoline was heading west on Barcelona Avenue at approximately 3:30 p.m. At about the same time, a black Nissan was heading south on The Esplanade. Both cars met in the intersection and collided, which led to the vehicles careening into the parking lot of a Beach Side Food Mart store. There, the Nissan hit a pole and the Econoline collided with the building.
Reports indicate the man driving the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. A young girl in the passenger seat of the vehicle had to be taken via helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center, where she was later reported to be in stable condition. The man driving the Ford van was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and the woman in his passenger seat was transported to Venice Regional Bayfront Health. One other person inside the store received treatment for minor injuries.
Investigators from the Venice Police Department continued to investigate the accident in the days that followed.
Take care at intersections
All drivers must obey the rules of the road at all times, which means following right-of-way rules at intersections. Motorists must stop at stop signs and red lights, and also follow all other right-of-way laws to avoid collisions at intersections and to ensure a proper flow of traffic. Failure to do so could in an infraction, if not an accident and serious legal consequences.
