One person was killed and two more suffered serious injuries in a collision between an SUV and a Truck on 36th Avenue East in Manatee County.
The accident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 13. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the SUV was heading south on 36th Avenue East in Palmetto at approximately 4 p.m. when it attempted a U-turn at the intersection of 21st Street Court East. However, in doing so, the SUV pulled right into the path of a truck traveling behind it on 36th Avenue East.
The driver of the truck attempted to take evasive maneuvers to avoid the truck, but a collision turned out to be unavoidable. The impact caused both vehicles to fall off the road into a ditch, where the truck overturned and came to a rest on top of the SUV (in part).
The driver of the SUV was a 67-year-old man from Sarasota who was killed in the accident. The driver of the truck was a 37-year-old Bradenton man with a 24-year-old passenger, also from Bradenton, both of whom sustained serious injuries.
Police continued to investigate the crash.
U-turns should only be made when safe
It is the responsibility of all drivers to make sure the way is completely clear and safe before making a U-turn anywhere on the road. A failure to do so will result in the driver making the turn being liable for any accidents and injuries they cause.
