A man from Parrish was charged with DWI manslaughter after drunkenly causing a car accident that resulted in the death of a seven-year-old boy.
According to Palmetto Police, the accident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, March 23, just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of 4th St. W. and 8th Ave. W. in Palmetto. The crash involved a Ford van, which police say the driver drove on to the sidewalk while the boy was taking a walk with his father.
Witnesses at the scene of the accident reported the father attempted to push the boy out of the way, but was too late. He died of his injuries at Tampa General Hospital after being airlifted away from the accident.
The 35-year-old driver faces prison time and was being held in jail on a $500,000 bound.
DWI convictions play a role in civil lawsuits
In addition to criminal actions taken against a perpetrator, victims can also file civil personal injury lawsuits against people who caused DWI accidents that resulted in injuries. There are fewer barriers to recovery in such cases, especially when they occur after the criminal case concludes, because a DWI conviction is, in essence, the proof of liability on the part of the defendant.
The compensation available for victims in these cases can be significant given the egregious conduct of the defendant, especially when the injuries are severe or fatal.
