A 19-year-old dirt biker was seriously injured after a car reportedly struck him at an intersection in Sarasota. According to police officers, a 50-year-old woman in a motor vehicle pulled out in front of the rider and hit him.
At the time of the crash, the dirt biker was allegedly popping a wheelie and likely had reduced control at the time. The bottom of the dirt bike struck the car, and the rider was thrown from his vehicle. He suffered serious injuries and was immediately transported to a local hospital. The woman sustained minor injuries in the accident and has been charged with violation of right-of-way.
Police are still investigating what exactly caused the woman to make a turn into the path of the dirt bike. However, these types of accidents are somewhat common, and often occur due to drivers’ failure to observe smaller vehicles on the road. Unfortunately, too many drivers do not display the same level of vigilance when looking out for these vehicles as they do large passenger cars, trucks and SUVs.
When an automobile collides with a smaller vehicle like a dirt bike or bicycle, the rider is often thrown from the bike. Even if riders are wearing helmets, they are likely to suffer serious injuries, and fatalities are a common result. Both motorists and bike riders must be cautious when traveling and keep an eye out for one another to avoid these dangerous crashes.
