Trucking Company Criticized for Safety Record After Recent Accident

A Georgia trucking company with several locations in Florida is under fire from critics after a recent accident shed light on its poor track record for safety.

That company is Davis Transfer, which has a location in Lakeland, Florida. An accident from last October is just one example brought up by critics when speaking to the company’s safety record. In that crash, a truck driver for the company reportedly ran through a stop sign and tried to make a left turn while a 26-year-old man was legally driving through the intersection. The collision resulted in the top of the young man’s car being sheared off, causing serious injuries. He passed away several days later at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

An investigation revealed the driver was responsible for the accident and had actually had his license revoked twice before for committing too many traffic violations. His license was revoked again in June 2015 in response to the fatal October crash.

A questionable record

Information from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration shows the company has been involved in a total of 31 accidents in just the last 24 months. The data is mostly incomplete and does not indicate who was at fault in each incident, but it is still an extremely high number of crashes for just one company. Most of the accidents involved injuries, and a few were fatal.

Other accidents are not included in company data, including fatal accidents involving company drivers in January and March.

Trucking companies are responsible for making sure they hire drivers with a good track record of safety and for establishing high standards of maintenance and vehicle operation.
