Tips for Taking Accident Site Photos

In the immediate aftermath of an accident, it is important to get your vehicle to safety and to check yourself and any passengers you have in your vehicle for injuries. When it is safe to do so, it is important for you to photograph the accident site, including vehicle damage and other relevant information, so you can provide your eventual accident claim with sufficient evidence.

Photos will be extremely useful when dealing with insurance adjusters investigating the claim. The photos will allow you to portray the location at the time of the accident, including road and weather conditions, location, position of vehicles, amount of debris, nature and degree of injuries and other accident details. These pictures serve as an objective portrayal of what happened, and can assist you when you recount the accident from your memory later on.

Here’s a quick selection of tips for taking good accident site photos:

  • Know what to capture: You should take photos of the car and its damage, other cars and their damage, skid marks, debris, the accident site, the location, traffic signals, the weather conditions and any visible injuries.
  • Angles: Try to take photos from a variety of angles. Get pictures from three or four different angles and distances to offer better perspective.
  • Landmarks: Try to keep common landmarks in each of the photos, which will help you demonstrate scale and distance. Make sure you’re not getting glare from sunlight.
  • Be quick: It’s important to capture the accident site as it existed, so don’t delay in getting photos. You won’t be able to come back to the site later and take more pictures, as everything will likely have been cleaned up.
