Sarasota Pedestrian Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver

The beautiful weather, natural beauty and varied attractions of Sarasota make it a perfect place for people who enjoy walking outdoors. Unfortunately, despite laws designed to protect walkers, accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles frequently occur. When these accidents involve hit-and-run drivers, pedestrians are left not only with physical injuries but also with the uncertainty of how to pursue appropriate compensation for the harm they’ve suffered.

One local hit-and-run victim is a Sarasota man who was walking home after celebrating the New Year. John Woodall says he was struck by a car while in the crosswalk at the intersection of Ringling and U.S. Highway 301. According to Woodall, the motorist fled the scene following the collision, which has left him a wheelchair while he recovers from his injuries.

If you’ve been hurt in a pedestrian accident or another type of collision where the at-fault driver did not stop to offer help and provide their contact information, there are several steps you can take, such as:

  • Report the accident — In the immediate aftermath of a hit-and-run accident, it's essential to report the incident to law enforcement as soon as possible. Provide as much detail as you can about the circumstances of the accident and any identifying information about the fleeing vehicle. Law enforcement will conduct an investigation to try to identify the liable motorist.
  •  Seek medical attention — Your health and well-being are of paramount importance. Even if you’re confident that your injuries are not severe, it's crucial to seek medical attention promptly following the accident. Some injuries may not be immediately apparent and could worsen without proper medical treatment. Documenting your injuries and medical treatment will also serve as crucial evidence in your case.
  • Review your Uninsured Motorist coverage — Florida law mandates that drivers maintain personal injury protection (PIP) insurance, which provides reimbursement for medical expenses and lost wages regardless of fault. However, if you're a pedestrian struck by a hit-and-run driver, you may not have access to the driver's insurance coverage. In such cases, your own uninsured motorist (UM) coverage can provide compensation for your injuries and damages.
  • Speak with a personal injury lawyer — Dealing with the aftermath of a hit-and-run accident can be overwhelming, especially when facing physical injuries and financial losses. Seeking guidance from an experienced personal injury attorney can help you understand your legal rights and options. An attorney can advocate on your behalf, negotiate with insurance companies and pursue compensation through legal action.
