Timing is Everything ─ Does it Apply to Driving?

Does the date, month, day of the week or time of day make a difference for driving? Should you take extra precautions at certain times? Apparently, the answer is yes.

While statistics vary from year to year, historical trends show that traffic fatalities follow a pattern. SafeMotorist.com reports that the most dangerous driving months of the year are August, October, July, November and December ─ in that order.

The most dangerous day to drive is Saturday, followed by Friday and then Thursday. Sunday and Tuesday are the least dangerous days.

The times of day when the likelihood of fatal accidents increases are, in this order, as follows:

  • 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • 9:00 p.m. to midnight
  • Noon to 3:00 p.m.
  • Midnight to 3:00 p.m.

Early risers on their way to work are not as apt to die in a fatal car crash as people involved in traffic later in the day. Rush hour traffic is the most perilous time to be on the road.

During holidays, fatal traffic accidents reach their peaks, and which holiday is the worst varies depending on the time period being studied. Safety.com listed July 4 as historically the worst day, but in 2010, September 18 (not even a holiday) saw the greatest number of traffic fatalities. In 2008, Forbes magazine released an article that ranked Thanksgiving as the most dangerous holiday for traffic deaths according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study. The study reviewed accidents from 2001 to 2006. Reasons given for Thanksgiving driving dangers ranged from alcohol consumption and traffic congestion to drowsiness and aggressive driving. The Fourth of July was the next deadliest holiday, followed by Memorial Day, then Labor Day, New Year's Eve and Halloween.

Unfortunately, traffic accidents can occur at any time in Sarasota and Manatee counties, and when they do, you should protect your rights by consulting with an experienced accident lawyer.
